New Solar PV Greenhouse
Incorporating Polysolar’s revolutionary transparent photovoltaic glazing
Polysolar, is an innovative developer and manufacturer of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) solutions, based at ideaSpace in Cambridge. The product is an innovative transparent glazing photovoltaic (PV) module that has been specifically designed for use as an integrated building material and is a cost effective alternative to conventional cladding materials.
Polysolar has recently launched a range of domestic greenhouses, carport, balustrades and canopies that incorporates its tinted transparent PV glass. These unique products deliver both the functions of these structures together with generating renewable electricity for the home through the Governments Feed-In-Tarff.
Hamish Watson, CEO of Polysolar, explains “For many homeowners putting conventional PV panels on the roof may not be possible for aesthetic, planning or positioning reasons, but putting a solar PV greenhouse in the garden can ‘kill two birds with one stone’. Fou get an effective PV system to power the home and a fully functional greenhouse. The PV panels in the greenhouse roof, despite cutting out some of the light, allow through the light spectrum used in plant photosynthesis. They also cut out the scorching effect of ultraviolet light and help maintain a more constant temperature in the greenhouse.”
With the recent halving of government subsidies for domestic PV installations and continuing controversy over the deployment of the technology, the UK PV industry needs to find solutions that are no longer dependent on subsidies for its future growth.
So what does the future hold for PV? To make PV economically viable as a domestic power source without subsidies, Polysolar argues that the PV needs to perform multiple functions - not just electricity generation. In other words the PV installation needs to offer customers additional benefits. With PV acting as a building material in its own right, substituting for existing construction materials and, thereby, representing only a marginal additional cost, rather than a ‘tack-on’ solution, PV can be cost effective without subsidies.
Polysolar offers a range of high quality domestic greenhouse kits ready for installation by qualified PV installers, from £4000 plus VAT. These include small scale aluminium greenhouses of 3.5m @ 0.5kWp to 8m @1.3kWp or above, offering a wide range of optional glasshouse features and lifetime guarantees.
